She didn’t feel forced to sit at the table anymore
There is a story I want to share with you because it says everything about why this work matters.
One of my students used to avoid the dinner table. Her parents told me it was always a struggle. She did not want to come sit down and the meals were always so tense.
After my Dining Skills class, she started coming to the table on her own and she was excited to be there. She wanted to set the table and was so happy to do it. She was also a super picky eater, but she begin trying new foods, even if it was little bitty bites :)
Her parents could hardly believe it.
Dinner time became calmer and the family could sit down and enjoy eating together.
This is what happens when kids learn they have power to help out at home. Kids start to feel they are part of meal time, not just being forced to sit there.
And the best part is, it does not take years to see a change. It can happen quickly when kids are shown how in a fun and supportive way.
When you teach dining skills, you are not just teaching kids how to use a fork or where a napkin goes. You are helping families come back together.
Because what you teach at the table stays with them for life.
